Canoes

We have one of the most extensive canoe lines available in the Ely area. This means when another business in Ely needs a special canoe, they phone us; thus giving us the nickname "The Outfitter's Outfitter"!

Voyageur 15' by Alumacraft is only 53 lbs. and 15 ft. long. It makes an excellent solo canoe for people looking for stability. It also works well for a tandem weekend trip or tandem day trips. It has great stability which makes it great to fish out. It is light to carry which works good for the canoeing novice as well.

Quetico 17' is Alumacraft's lightweight 63 lb. canoes. It has been the work horse of the outfitting industry. It is one of the best all-around canoes that there is. It makes a great fishing platform, carrying gear and people safely. The built-in carry yoke is the best in the business.

Quetico 18.5' is a lightweight 70 lb. canoe that has been used as a three-person canoe ever since it was made. With its outside keel, it's very stable. It's also good for hauling big loads for long periods of time.

The Voyageur 17' Ultralight by Alumacraft is just 56 lbs. This canoe is the best compromise, it has great balance and very lightweight. The yoke is positioned in the middle of the canoe's weight so perfectly that it portages as well as most Kevlar canoes. The outside cruising keel makes it very stable for fishing and bad weather. The lower profile makes it easy to paddle in the wind.

The Old Town Pack solo canoe is a light load at 33 lbs., so if you can paddle it, you can portage it. This 12-foot canoe has a V-entry hull with a keel that provides for easy paddling on the water. The Pack can hold up to 400 lbs. and has a center depth 11.5".

The Old Town Penobscot 15' is an Old Town Royalex solo canoe that can hold up to 625 lbs. with a dry weight of 49 lbs.. The Penobscot features Old Town's unique adjustable center seat/carry system. Simply slide the seat back to its paddling position, or to the forward where it serves as a comfortable carrying yoke.

The Old Town Penobscot 16' is a versatile Old Town Royalex canoe that holds up to 860 lbs. in its 16'2" frame. With a weight of 58 lbs., the Penobscot 16 is a fine tandem canoe that can even be equipped with a center seat for solo performance or for taking on an extra passenger. Its straight-on speed, handling ease, and capacity are exactly what an all-around performance canoe should be.

The Old Town Penobscot 17' is the premier Old Town Royalex design for paddling ease and quickness; the muscle to handle 1,100 lbs. of paddlers and gear. Yet, the Penobscot 17 weighs in at an easily-transportable 65 lbs. With a width of 35" and a depth of 14.5", you'll enjoy the comfort and paddling ease of this high-performance tandem canoe.

The Wenonah Prism can also be called "the Sundowner solo" because it works well for just about everybody. Weighing in at 32 lbs., the Prism is 16.5' long and has a center depth of 13" and a gunwale width of 26". It has the stability needed by beginners, the efficiency expected by experts, and the volume needed for tripping.

The Wenonah Spirit II Kevlar. "Balanced" is the best word to describe the Spirit II. It is big enough for trips, travels distances easily, maneuvers quickly, capable on big lakes and is stable. So, does it obsolete all other canoes? No. There are models that hold more, go faster, turn quicker or handle rougher waters. But the Spirit is far more versatile. It is 17' long which is a good compromise between the performance of a longer hull and maneuverability of a shorter one. It is safe and roomy to with enough capacity for medium-heavy trips. Carrying two large people it draws just 3", leaving lots of reserve freeboard and volume. Weight on this canoe is only 43 lbs. This canoe is our choice for fly-in trips and will nest inside an 18' Champlain so there is just one external load on the floatplane.

The 18-foot Wenonah Champlain honors the French-Canadian voyageurs who hauled huge loads thousands of miles across treacherous waters. And while it's not so immense as the Canot du Nord of the fur trade, the Champlain is very large for an all-purpose model. At 18' long, with a maximum width of 36.5" and a center depth of 13.5", this is Wenonah's largest tandem, save for the Itasca. It has excellent initial stability due to its size and its shallow-arched hull also makes it less disturbed by waves and easier for paddlers to handle. It has a little more volume than the 18' Sundowner and Minnesota II. This canoe is our choice for fly-in trips where we 'nest' a shorter canoe inside of a longer one.

The Minnesota II is John and Lynn's favorite canoe. It's Wenonah's fastest high-capacity tripper with a length of 18.5' and a weight of 42 lbs. With a gunwale of 33.5" and center depth of 12.5", the Minnesota II is extremely seaworthy, handling wind-whipping waves and whitewater with amazing stability.

The Minnesota III is a 20' fast tripping canoe for three that was developed in response to the new BWCAW regulations that allow nine people per group but only four canoes. Weighing in at 52 lbs., the Minnesota III is basically a stretched-out Minnesota II with a third seat just in front of the back seat.

Quetico 16 Solo - Kevlar. The Quetico 16 tandem that has been so popular now had a solo version. It's only 42 lbs. and 16'2". Basically the same dimensions as the original but Souris River has removed a seat and placed the solo seat more towards the middle. The original was used often as a solo and this model should be even better.

The Souris River Quetico 16, at 16.2 ft long and only 49 lbs. is new from Souris Canoes. Novice and experienced paddlers alike will love this canoe. It was designed to be very stable and track straight. We were pleased to discover how fast it is, particularly for a 16-foot canoe. This canoe is good for fishing, day trips, and even for trips taken for two weeks. Another unexpected discovery we made during our testing of this design is that it is an exceptional solo canoe. It's extremely versatile and does many things well. It's made out of a new material called Duralite which is almost as light as Kevlar but much tougher. it's made from an epoxy resin system but not as expensive as Kevlar.

Introducing the Souris River Quetico 17. At 17' long, it is a lot roomier than the Quetico 16. This canoe is one of John's favorite for fishing and river travel. It handles rough water like a dream, tracks and turns well, and is good for inexperienced paddlers. There is a good amount of freeboard even when carrying a load. This canoe comes in both Kevlar (42 lbs.) and Duralite (50 lbs.).

The Prijon Seayak kayak, at 49 lbs., sets the pace for solo touring. The new design offers more volume, more storage capacity, and higher stability. The Seayak's sleek lines and trihedral hull provide outstanding speed and stability. Large storage capacity especially suits the Seayak for extended excursions. A portage yoke makes this easier for use in the BWCA.

The Prijon, Yukon Expedition is another great design. It features a slightly raised trihedral deck for more volume, stability, and consistent tracking. It is just 14.5" long which is shorter than the Seayak. This makes it easier to maneuver in rivers and tight situations. It has a volume of 122 gallons which is 21 gallons larger than the Seayak. This added volume does add weight to the kayak (weight is 59 lbs.) but also increases the amount of gear you can carry with you.

The Kodiak is a slender, fast touring kayak ideal for extended self-supported expeditions. In order to make your trips as comfortable as possible, Prijon has equipped the Kodiak with a 92 cm cockpit and an adjustable ergonomic seat and thigh braces. Both watertight dry storage compartments provide maximum space for your gear. Binoculars, water bottles, sunglasses, and your compass are safe and easily accessible in the deck netting. Length is 17' and weight is 62 lbs.

The Old Town Loon I and the Loon II (2 person design) combine paddling performance along with excellent stability. Adding to the comfort is the large nonconfining cockpit and especially designed folding high seat back. The Loon I weighs 47 lbs. and is 13.6' long. The Loon II is 69 lbs. and 15' long.

The Souris River Quetico 18.5. After the great success of the Quetico 17, new for 2000, Souris River decided to come out with an even larger volume boat. This boat tracks and turns well, handles large waves plus carries large loads for extended trips or if a third person is added. A middle seat has been added. It's 18.5 feet long, has a gunwale width of 35.5", a depth of 13.5", and the bow and stern height is 20".

The Kevlar version weighs 48 lbs., the Duralite 58 lbs. John is looking at using this canoe to eventually replace the Alumacraft 18.5" and at a 12 lb. difference we think this will be a welcome thing.

Wenonah has done it again! New in 2002 was a Minnesota IV! It is 23' long, 35" wide, and will weigh about 62 lbs. The longer a canoe is, the faster it is and this canoe will fly across the lakes! It will be faster, more stable, and the largest capacity canoe in the BWCA and Quetico. It will have four seats, the two center seats will be web seats, and the end ones will be sliding bucket seats. This is a great canoe for a family of four, a true Voyageur canoe!
